The six service chiefs served as component commanders of The Joint Task Force-Armed Forces Inaugural Committee. Military involvement in the presidential inauguration is a tradition that dates back to George Washington. The tradition allows the Armed Forces to celebrate democracy, honor the new commander in chief, and recognize civilian control of the military.
